Wrapped in his Cloak (Al-Muddaththir)

Verses 1-7 GROUP_1534 74.1-7

1
يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ
O, you, wrapped in your cloak,
2
قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
arise and give warning!
3
وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
Proclaim the glory of your Lord;
4
وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
purify your garments;
5
وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ
shun uncleanness;
6
وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return;
7
وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ
and for the sake of your Lord, be patient.

Commentary

(a) The real work of a prophet is warning the people, i.e. informing them of the serious nature of the events which will unfold in the Hereafter. This task can be performed only by one whose heart is overflowing with the realisation of God’s Majesty, who possesses a noble character, who shuns all evil, who does good without aspiring to any recompense, who can be unilaterally tolerant and exercise patience in the face of trouble created by others.
